Families in Transition

McKinney-Vento Program ensures the rights of students identified as homeless to have equal access to the same free, appropriate public education.

Program Mission

Our mission is to ensure homeless students the greatest level of academic success possible, in accordance with the McKinney Vento Act.

Who qualifies for services?

If any of the following choices apply to you and your family, your child could be eligible for McKinney-Vento services. For more information, contact the Federal Programs office using the contact numbers below. 

Where does the student stay at night?

  • ____ in a shelter
  • ____ in a home with family or friends because we do not have a place of our own
  • ____ in a car, campground or park
  • ____ in a hotel or motel
  • ____ somewhere other than in the care or custody of a parent or guardian
  • ____ in a place that is not meant for people, like an abandoned building or shed

You Have Rights 

If your family has lost their home due to a natural disaster, fire, foreclosure, or other economic reasons please complete a new residency form and return it to your school guidance counselor.  You have certain rights, such as:

  • Immediate or continued enrollment in school
  • Free transportation to school of origin
  • Automatic enrollment in the Free Lunch Program for the remainder of the school year
  • Assistance with hygiene items and school clothing
  • Assistance with school supplies
  • Referrals to social services for additional services
