College Board Advanced Placement (AP)

The Advanced Placement Program is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools, colleges, and universities. Since its inception in 1955, the AP Program has provided motivated high school students with the opportunity to take college-level courses in a high school setting. Students who participate in the AP Program not only gain college-level skills, but in many cases, they earn college credit by scoring a 3 or higher on the AP exam at the end of the course. AP courses are taught by AP certified high school teachers who follow college course guidelines developed and published by the College Board and attend AP training. All AP courses receive an additional 1.0 weighting. The AP exam score is not part of the student's classroom grade. The College Board recognizes students who pass three or more AP exams each year.

  • AP Scholar- receive a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

  • AP Scholar with Honor- receive at least an average score of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on four or more AP exams.

  • AP Scholar with Distinction- receive at least an average score of 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more AP exams.

  • AP National Scholar- receive at least an average score of 4.0 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more AP exams.

  • AP Capstone Diploma- granted when scores of 3 or higher are earned in both AP Seminar and AP Research, along with four additional AP courses.

Dual Enrollment

Dual enrollment is a statewide program for high school students to enroll free of charge in college courses to earn both college credit and credit toward high school graduation. The mission of dual enrollment is to shorten the time necessary for a student to complete the requirements of a high school diploma and a post-secondary degree, to broaden the scope of curricular options available to students, and to increase the depth of study available for a particular subject. Enrollment is limited to no more than 16 hours for Fall and Spring semesters. State guidelines delineate courses that may be used in dual enrollment and eligibility criteria for student participation. Students who plan to attend college outside of Florida should check with the university they plan to attend about the transfer of college credits.

Northwest Florida State College

Students must have parent permission and must:

  • Minimum 3.0 GPA, cumulative/unweighted

  • Must achieve the minimum required scores on an approved placement test

  • Juniors and seniors are eligible to participate in college-credit courses during school hours, after school hours, and during summer term

  • Sophomore students are eligible to participate in college-credit courses after school hours, during the summer term, or during the regular school day on an exception basis

  • Rising sophomore students are eligible to participate in college-credit courses during the summer session that begins after the last day of their freshman school year

Emerald Coast Technical College

Career and technical dual enrollment requirements for Emerald Coast Technical College include:

  • Cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.0 or above

  • Must be at least 16 years old

  • Currently enrolled in a WCSD high school

  • Free of disciplinary action(s) while enrolled in CTE dual enrollment.

  • Demonstrate readiness for career-level course work

  • Must take the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE)

  • Pursue an approved industry certification

  • Meet the attendance requirements of their program of enrollment

  • Student and parent/guardian MUST attend mandatory information session with ECTC advisor/counselor to review ECTC current satisfactory academic progress policies

  • Must not be scheduled to graduate prior to the completion of the dual enrollment course
